Fletcher (1979) stated:-
P. culturia was proposed by Hübner as the name for Phalaena polita Cramer sensu Stoll, 1790, in Cramer, Uitlandsche Kapallen (Papillons exot) (Aanhangsel): 143, pl.31, fig.4, the polita Cramer, 1780, ibidem 3: 152, pl.276, fig.F, and which he listed as Phalaena * Politata, an incorrect subsequent spelling repeated by Hübner.
In a revision of Phrygonis, Prout, 1933, Novit. zool. 39: 1-9, suggested Stoll to have been mistaken in giving Surinam as the locality for the male specimen he illustrated. Prout believed it is more likely to have been Antillean. In the revision, P. cultaria was tentatively listed as a junior subjective synonym of Phalaena argentata Drury, 1773, Illust. nat. Hist. exot. Insects 2: Index , and 25, pl.14, fig.2.
