Aetheoptera Rippon, 1894 and Schoenbergia Pagenstecher, 1893 were treated as valid subgenera of Ornithoptera, both being revalidated by Haugum & Low, 1978, A monograph of the birdwing butterflies. Volume 1, part 1. Introduction, Ornithoptera (Aetheoptera), p.44 and p. 193 [respectively].
