Nye & Fletcher (1991) stated:-

Opogona was included in the "Lyonetiadae" by Fletcher, 1929, Mem. Dep. Agric. India (Ent.) 11: 153; it was transferred to the Tineidae by Davis, 1978, Smithson. Contr. Zool. 282:1.

OPOGONA was included within the subfamily TINEIDAE: HIEROXESTINAE by Davis & Robinson, in Kristensen (1999).

Robinson (2001) included the type-species of EXALA Meyrick, 1912, strassenella Enderlein, 1903, as a junior synonym of omoscopa Meyrick, 1903, placed in the genus OPOGONA Zeller, 1853.

Robinson (2001) included the type-species of CACHURA Walker, 1864; CONCHYLIOSPILA Wallengren, 1861; DENDRONEURA Walsingham, 1892; HIEROXESTIS Meyrick, 1893; LOZOSTOMA Stainton, 1859 in the genus OPOGONA Zeller, 1853.

Robinson (2001) included 174 species in the genus.
