Kocak (1980, Communs Fac. Sci. Univ. Ankara (C) 24: 38) stated that the type-species should be Noctua perla [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, by subsequent designation by Stephens, 1835, Illust. Br. Ent. (Haustellata) 4: 4. At this reference Stephens included only one species, perla, in his usage of Metachrostis but he did not indicate that he considered it to be the type-species.

METACHROSTIS is the objective replacement name for LEPTOSIA Guenée, 1841 (preoccupied by LEPTOSIA Hübner, 1818 - Pieridae).

Poole (1989) included 17 species in the genus METACHROSTIS.
