Macapta was proposed by Hampson as an emendation of Makapta Schaus, 1906, but as the latter is a junior homonym (see below), Hampson's emendation must be used as the objective replacement name.

Poole (1989) included MACAPTA in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE, subsequently restricted to the genus AMPHIPYRA by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999). Other genera formerly treated in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE are treated as HADENINAE by Kitching & Rawlins (loc. cit.).

Poole (1989) included MAKAPTA Schaus, 1906 (preoccupied) as a junior synonym of MACAPTA Hampson, 1910.

Poole (1989) included 13 species in the genus MACAPTA.
