Fletcher (1979) stated:-
This genus was originally proposed in the Drepanidae, but has since been placed in the Saturniidae by Dyar, 1914, Proc. U.S. natn. Mus. 47: 159.
Fletcher & Nye (1982, Generic Names of Moths of the World) stated:-
L. obliqua is a junior subjective synonym of Phalaena achelous Cramer, 1777, Uitlandsche Kapellen (Papillons exot.) 2: 22, pl.111, fig.A. P. achelous is dated from the wrapper of part 10, not from the title-page of volume 2 which is dated 1779.
Placed on the Official list of Generic Names in Zoology with Name No.2059.
Lonomia was established in the Drepanulidae, now Drepanidae; it was placed in the Lasiocampidae by Druce, 1886, Biologia cent.-am. (Zool.) Lepid.-Heterocera 1: 199. Dyar, 1914, Proc. U.S. natn. Mus. 47: 159, placed Lonomia in the Saturniidae.
LONOMIA was included within the subfamily SATURNIIDAE: HEMILEUCINAE by Lemaire & Minet, in Kristensen (1999).
