KARANA Moore, 1882 was treated as a valid genus, Holloway, 1989 Malayan Nature Journal 42 (2-3) : 126.

Poole (1989) included KARANA in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE, subsequently restricted to the genus AMPHIPYRA by Kitching & Rawlins, in Kristensen (1999). Other genera formerly treated in the subfamily AMPHIPYRINAE are treated as HADENINAE by Kitching & Rawlins (loc. cit.).

Poole (1989) also included YULA Bethune-Baker, 1906 as a junior synonym of KARANA Moore, 1882 and as a junior synonym of EUPLEXIA Stephens, 1829.

Poole (1989) included 11 species in the genus KARANA.
