Notes:
Cowan (1970: 41) stated:-

ALCYONEIS and Junonia Hübner, [1819] : 35 and 34, are generally regarded as congeneric.

Precedence was accorded to Junonia by Doubleday, 1849 (Gen. diurn. Lep. 1 : 206), acting as First Reviser.

Cowan (1970, Annot.. Rhop.: 49) stated:-

JUNONIA - The name Papilio lavinia Cramer, 1775 is invalid as a junior primary homonym of P. lavinia Fabricius, 1775, Syst. Ent. : 450, a name currently placed in the genus Victorina. The oldest valid name subjectively applicable to the present restricted species appears to be P. evarete Cramer, [1779], Uitl. Kap. 3 : 18, pl. 203, figs. C, D. However, the wider view was put by Corbet, 1948 (Entomologist 81 : 54-56), that lavinia, evarete and others are subspecies of the pan-tropical Papilio orithya Linnaeus, 1758, Syst. Nat. (ed. 10) 1 : 473.

As has been noted under Alcyoneis above, and Precis below, Junonia has precedence over both.

Junonia Hübner, was brought out of synonymy by Tilden, 1973, Journal Res. Lepid. 12 (4) : 216 [Treated as a valid genus by Hemming, 1967].

JUNONIA was included within the subfamily NYMPHALIDAE: NYMPHALINAE by Ackery et al., in Kristensen (1999).

The higher classification used here follows Lamas (2008).
