Tams proposed this name for the part of Hydrilla Boisduval, 1840, as restricted by Guenée, 1852, Hist. nat. insectes (Lépid.) 5: 236, and at that time known as 'Hydrilla Guenée'. Tams also proposed the emendation of the spelling of the type-species to H. palustris. Under the Code, Article 32 (a) (ii), the original spelling should be retained.
