Sphinx nessus Cramer, 1777, is a junior primary homonym of Sphinx nessus Drury, 1773, Illust. nat. Hist. exot. Insects 2: 46, index, pl.27, fig.1. There is no objective replacement name but Amphion floridensis Clark, 1920, established in the combination Amphion nessus floridensis Clark, 1920, Proc. New Engl. zool. Club 7: 73, and treated by Hodges, 1971, in Dominick et al., Moths Am. N. of Mexico 21: 136, as a junior subjective synonym of Sphinx nessus Cramer, 1777, is available for use as a subjective replacement name. S. nessus is dated from the wrapper of part 9, not from the title-page of volume 2 which is dated 1779.
