Gymnelia Walker probably originated from Boisduval who attributed it to himself in Boisduval, 1870, Considerations L├ępid. Guatemala: 80. Gymnelia was established as a subgenus of Glaucopis Fabricius, 1807, in the `Zygaenides', now Zygaenidae; it was placed in the Syntomidae, now Ctenuchidae, by Hampson, 1898, Cat. Lepid. Phalaenae Br. Mus. 1: 189.
