Nye & Fletcher (1991) included GONIOTERMA in the subfamily OECOPHORIDAE: STENOMINAE, treated by Hodges, in Kristensen (1999) as ELACHISTIDAE: STENOMATINAE.

Nye & Fletcher (1991) stated:-

The type-species was proposed as "burmaniana" on page 164; in the index on page 248 published in 1782 it was cited as burmanniana. Walsingham, 1897, used only the latter spelling but in Walsingham, 1913, Biologia cent.- am. (Zool.) Lepid.-Heterocera 4: 188, both spellings were cited and the double n spelling was used as the valid name and has been in general use ever since as a justified emendation.
