Fletcher (1979) stated:-

This genus was originally proposed in the Lithosiidae (now Arctiidae), but has since been transferred to the Geometridae; its first published use in this family appears to have been by Bethune-Baker, 1911, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (8) 7: 560.

Watson, Fletcher & Nye (1980) stated:-

Geodena was established in the Lithosiidae, now Arctiidae Lithosiinae; it was placed in the Liparidae, now Lymantriidae, by Kirby, 1892, ibidem 1: 429; it was transferred to the Aganaidae, now Arctiidae Aganainae, by Swinhoe, 1903, Trans. ent. Soc. Lond. 1903: 497; and was placed in the Geometridae by Bethune-Baker, 1911, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (8) 7: 560.

Parsons et al. (1999) included NOTHYPSA Warren, 1909 as a junior synonym of GEODENA Walker, 1856 [May 10].

Parsons et al. (1999) included 32 species and 4 subspecies (inc. nominates) in the genus GEODENA.
