Watson, Fletcher & Nye (1980) stated:-

A. aequalis is a junior subjective synonym of Phalaena maculosa Stoll, 1781, in Cramer, Uitlandsche Kapellen (Papillons exot.) 4: 156, 250. Dated from the wrapper of the part and not from the title-page of the volume, 1782.

Alpenus Walker, 1855, was treated as a valid genus and brought out of synonymy by Watson, 1988, Entomologica Scandinavica 19 (3) : 253.
