Is this a smooth newt?

We have a very prolific newt pond which bred many smooth newts (Lissotriton vulgaris) last year and some hibernated in the pond overwinter.

Today, 19 April 2013, my daughter Ellie noticed this one had unusual army-type camouflage markings on her (?looks like a pregnant female, although it has an orange bottom - sperm packages?) back.

    Hello there.

This reminds me of the Southern Marbled Newt Triturus pygmaeus though what one would be doing so far fom Spain is a little mystifying. I seem to remember an odd newt turning up on this board last year although I can't remember the details owing to my 'goldfish' memory.

    Best wishes Lewis

    Hi there,

While the camouflage patern does recall the Southern Marbled Newt Triturus pygmaeus, and there is some record of establish Marbled Newt  Triturus marmoratus in the UK, this is a gravid Alpine Newt female.

Here are picture of a marbled newt with a female and then the rather stunning male Alpine Newts for comparison:

now the bad news, Alpine newts are an introduced species, and are strongly suspected of being carriers of the chytrid fungus. This disease is extremely dangerous and has lead to the extension of a large number of amphibians species. If you have alpine Newt in your garden, it is very important that you contact your local Amphibian and Reptile Group, here is the website for the Surrey group if you do not know how to contact your local group, I am sure they can help:
