I saw these two birds walking across a local estuary at low tide. They look like geese to me and I even feel I ought to know what they are, but...
These are Shelduck
Thank you very much. I was almost convinced it was a goose, so rather pleased to read in the Wikipedia article that "The Common Shelduck resembles a small short-necked goose in size and shape".
What are the basic differences between ducks and geese anyway, when some, like these birds, are intermediate in size and length of neck? Even swans and geese can interbreed producing "swooses".
