Hi, I recently found this item in a chalk escarpment in Buckinghamshire, along with several clam-like fossils (bi-valves?). Can anyone please tell me if it is even a fossil, and if so what it might be?
They are fossils all right, looks like you are correct, they are bivalves, but the other things are ammonite sections.
Cool, hadn't thought of ammonite - many thanks for such a quick reply Keith :-)
It's an internal mould of an ammonite chamber. The wavy surface shows the nature of the suture between 2 chambers.
Cool, thanks for the speedy help - have a good mind to go back now and try to find some more pieces!
