Hello, on a fossil hunting trip to Lyme last October I stumbled across this, could anyone enlighten me as to what it is?
Thanks in advance!
Does not look like anything that I've seen before, but are you sure that it is the remains of an organism? I just wonder from the photo whether it is something made of plastic... Were you able to collect it/pick it up?
I have been trying to convince myself that it is something more interesting than a piece of sea worn bungee cord. ..... but I can't. The colours appear to be very regular and if it was a tube worm it would not have the 'fan-like' projections at both ends. I have often thought that it would be great to make a collection of the variety of jetsam found on beaches and to try and work out their origins. American artist Mark Dion put together an exhibition of 'stuff' found on the foreshore of the Thames at the Tate:
This is a quirky little story about one of our local beaches - please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you don't mind us running a local news story about this and are happy to supply a few more details. I know it came to nothing but people will be interested that a local find featured on a NHM message board. Thanks!
Thanks for all of your contributions! I wasn't able to collect it unfortunately though i did try but the end on the far left of the picture was stuck firmly under the sand though i did try! And now you mention it it does resemble a bungee cord actually.
Thanks again for the swift responses
