We recently visited southern india and were lucky enough to watch a red weaver ant mimic spider. An absolutly fasinating spider. However we a strugling to find further info on the lifecycle and morphology of this spider. Can anyone help guide us in the right direction? Also do we have any ant mimic spiders in the uk?
The red weaver ant mimic is a Myrmarachne species, and we have another species of the genus in the UK, M. formicaria. There are other UK species that mimic ants to an extent but probably not quite as well as Myrmarachne.
Here is a link to a question that was answered on AntWeb - it contains other links that you may find useful and in turn those links may lead you through to research papers that may help you unravel more about the biology of this group of spiders. That said from the browsing I have done most concentrate on descriptions and distributions with little to say specifically about life history, though this is probably as for most species it us relatively unknown and/or broadly similar.
