I am looking to develop a web site which is able to hold details of species and where to find them in our local area, coastal Suffolk. The site will be primarily for use by amateur wildlife watchers and tourists. I therefore need data which will not take a scientist to use and interpret. I am looking for reliable and manintained sources of data about species, including common (vernacular) and latin names. Detail down to sub-species will be helpful and taxonomic details, such as phylum, class, order, may also help. It need not be "comprehensive" and will probably be restricted to birds, mammals and flowering plants in the UK, but a scheme which is capable of being widen to increase geographic and taxon coverage would be good, i.e. as standardise a data set as possible. I will be linking this into sites and habitats data. I am happy to use the first three levels of the EUNIS data for habitat. Any advice about species "metadata" and where to source non-copyrighted information?
