I saw this insect between 3000 and 4000m altitude in the Andes a couple of weeks ago. I am presuming it is a hoverfly with an extended proboscis for reaching nectar. Could somebody help identify it please?
I'm not an expert but it looks very much like a Bee fly
It's not a hoverfly (Syrphidae) nor a bee-fly (Bombyliidae), but a horsefly (Tabanidae).
Reminds a lot the Old World genus Philoliche and Pangonius, but I don't know if these appear also in America.
