All the descriptions I've read of spider bites have been of quite nasty reactions. Are there, however, any UK spiders whose bites might be similar to flea or bedbug bites?
Why I ask: something was biting me in bed. First I thought mosquito. Was getting one or two bites per night. Then feared bedbugs, as my husband came back from Italy recently with a lot of bites on his back which we thought might be from bedbugs.
I stripped all the bedding off my bed and washed it - since then, no bites. Due to the fear of bedbugs, I soaked and then washed the bedding, twice. Then decided to iron all the seams with a hot iron. (In place of the probably more advisable route of taking it all to a launderette and giving it 20mins in a hot dryer). While doing so, I found something in the seams a pillowcase - which turns out to be a smallish black spider. Coincidence? I expect so, but would at least like to investigate this.
It's pretty squished, having been soaked and washed twice over. However it is definitely a spider, and black. It looks as though the abdomen is about 3 or 4mm.
I know the pattern of biting sounds more like a parasitic feeder like a flea or bedbug. Just curious.
