I'm really intrested in moths, and as I'm 12 years old I'm always on the go looking for stuff to do including where would be the best place to put a moth trap as I've got one and iI live a Wiltshire town so I don't really have the most renouned area for migrants!!! So it would really help just to know what is the top place!! This is mine!!!!
I think its brilliant that you've got your own moth trap and are so interested in moths. I'm not from around your area so couldn't tell you the best places to go but I have a few tips for you to think about.
First is where is this photo taken, if its in a garden you have access to like your own or a neighbours or relatives thats the best place for you to start. Its a place you can regularly trap and keep records (this is very important) and report these to your County Moth Recorder. You may think you would just get all the 'boring' moths by being in town, but I can assure you that you will enjoy seeing what is just outside your door, and many of them will be far from 'boring'.
As mentioned your County Recorder, get in touch with them, they will be thrilled with your records and enthusiasum and will have local information on locations, better yet there may be a county moth group in your area, we have Sussex Moth group here, and have just started our own local branch. We get together at least once a moth in locations in and around us to do "mothing", anyone from the Sussex Moth Group is welcome, so you may find other folks that you can go mothing with to some locations. Here is a link to a list of County Recorders.
The only other things I would mention is of course its meant to be fun as well so enjoy yourself! Get yourself a notebook and a camera for those 'uber' moths as I call them, to that they can be reported and confirmed, and of course you may already have a good moth book, all the books by British Wildlife Publising in Dorset ie: Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland are probably the best to own, they have a Consice Guide as well that is good for out in the field on dewey nights..lol and a new Micro Moth book that is very good.
