Please could someone help me identify this spider, found at our home in East Molesey, Surrey? Its body measures c. 5mm diameter, and we found it in a spindly, messy looking web on our garage door.
Also, please advise on what to do with it. Is it safe to leave it in the garden with small children about, or should I rehome it in a nearby open space? We are not keen on destroying it, unless it is considered an invasive pest. It is currently living in a jam jar in our kitchen.
Looks like a Noble false widow to me but hopefully someone more expert can confirm. They are generally harmless unlesss 'provoked' into biting e.g. by being handled roughly or by getting trapped between clothes and skin. I would leave it where it is, but advise your children to treat it with the same respect they would a wasp as they do have a venomous bite (more often than not, it feels like a bee or wasp sting).
