I washed some grapes this morning and this was floating in the water afterwards! The packaging said the grapes had come from Brazil. Never recall seeing anything like it before. It has 2 distinct dark/black oval patches on the back with white stripes and a very thin black stripe. Was already dead when I fished it out of the water. Any help gratefully received as if it is not native uk really feel I should inform the retailer. Thanks in advance, J
I wouldn't be surprised if it was Plexippus paykulli, a jumping spider that has managed to spread itself around tropical regions of the world, but it would need a better photo to be sure 'cos I'm not even sure if it is a jumping spider. Anyway, see -
OK, that's a bit better. I'm sure it's a jumping spider and not a native UK species. And certainly P. paykulli looks a good match. See this picture which is even better
However, beyond that we have to be careful. I think someone has posted a picture of this species on this forum previously saying it had taken up residence in his glasshouse. Jumping spiders, particularly this one, seem good at distributing themselves around the world. So, it's hard to be sure at which point it got in the grapes. And P. paykulli isn't a dangerous species, as far as I'm aware.
