Orange flying beetle - please help with identifying it...

Just recently, in the last week to be excact, we have been swarmed at around 9:30pm every night by about 30 or so of these flying creatures. We live next to the Thames in East London and at first I thought they might be hornets due to the orange colour and slow, sluggish flying around and buzzing into windows.

I was more concerned that these insects might attack us or swarm on my sons until this morning one of them flew into the window with enough force to stun it. I was able to get a photo of the creature before it sorted itself out and then flew off.

Can anybody tell me what it is? I'm assuming that it is some sort of beetle now that I've had a closer inspection and it doesn't look very dangerous.

There is an area of scrubland next to our appartment block and we think that they are flying up from that - the weird thing is that they only seem to be flying into a neighbour's and our windows at the same time every evening.

I'd like to think they are harmless so that we can watch them without fear of getting stung.

It's about 2 cm in length - no visible sting and looks like a beetle.

Here's the mugshot.

PS Cheers for any help in advance.
