Caterpillar identification please!

Hi,

My 6 yr old daughter has just found this caterpillar in our garden, on the rope of the swing. We have looked at various caterpillar ID sites but can't see anything that looks the same as this one.

Please could someone help us figure out what kind he is? We'd be very grateful. We live in Wiltshire if that helps.

Many thanks,

ZC & daughter

P.S. We've just put him back in the garden and noticed he has a white belly with big black spots on each segment! Does this help?

Hi, sorry for the delay in answering.

It looks like a crane fly larva, commonly known as a leatherjacket.

    hope this helps

    regards

Sorry Habdab - I don't think this DOES look like a cranefly larva (and nor does the other caterpillar ID from today).  Reason for my thinking - crane fly larvae have a pretty distinctive head end which is almost "frilly" and no legs.  This has a distinctively caterpillar-like head and visible legs.  Having said all that, I have no idea what it actually is - back to the ID books....
