Help!

Found this one in the bathroom.. measures about 3 inches across, has orange and black striped coarsely haired legs. Not one I'd like to upset..

Any ideas what it could be (we live in East Sussex)

    Re: Help!

    Hello there.

I don't know if it is my monitor but the photo is very dark. So I lightened it quite considerably and I have to say that I'm really not too sure what it is. At three inches across you would normally suspect a Tegenaria Sp. the House spider but the legs look too stripy to me and the body looks like the wrong shape. The good news is that there are far better experts than me on this forum and I'm sure they will tell both of us what it is.

        Hello again.

I have just realised that there was a lot of body distortion caused by shadows. So I shopped  them out and suddenly it starts to look like a little like a male Tegenaria.

        Best wishes Lewis

Looks like a cave spider, Meta menardi, to me but I thought you were more familar with this species than me Lewis. Dunno what it's doing in a kitchen though, if it is a cave spider.

If it is a Tegenaria sp. is it possible that it is a Cardinal spider (Tegenaria parietina) given the size of 3 inches?

YES, Jaguarondi you are right! I don't know why I didn't think of it. The only thing we need to find out now is, is the bathroom underground (does it have any natural light) and is there an access to an interesting void from the bathroom. Still cant belive that I didn't identify it because it was in a bathroom.

Why do people always find insects in their bathrooms - this puzzles me. They are sitting there on the porcelain chair, and there a fella comes walking - glad I have my camera - SNAP! Why bring your camera to the loo? You don't take photos of THAT? Or do you?
