Found this one in the bathroom.. measures about 3 inches across, has orange and black striped coarsely haired legs. Not one I'd like to upset..
Any ideas what it could be (we live in East Sussex)
I don't know if it is my monitor but the photo is very dark. So I lightened it quite considerably and I have to say that I'm really not too sure what it is. At three inches across you would normally suspect a Tegenaria Sp. the House spider but the legs look too stripy to me and the body looks like the wrong shape. The good news is that there are far better experts than me on this forum and I'm sure they will tell both of us what it is.
It's in hiding right now, but it's body is definitely the wrong shape. I'll look forward to see if anyone else has suggestions. He's very shiny. Usually happy to pick up.. but not so very certain about this one...
YES, Jaguarondi you are right! I don't know why I didn't think of it. The only thing we need to find out now is, is the bathroom underground (does it have any natural light) and is there an access to an interesting void from the bathroom. Still cant belive that I didn't identify it because it was in a bathroom.
Hey, you lot are very helpful!
Bit more data for you. The bathroom where this lovely fellow has chosen to chill is on a top floor, it has a natural source of light. the interesting void in question could be the defunt air vent (you know the type that spins automatically with wind.. exept ours is broken so it's permanently open.. leads all the way down to the ground floor... nice dark and damp? The Cardinal Spider is pretty spot on in terms of features... He comes out at night so I'm going to see if I can get a better look and photo.
Why do people always find insects in their bathrooms - this puzzles me. They are sitting there on the porcelain chair, and there a fella comes walking - glad I have my camera - SNAP! Why bring your camera to the loo? You don't take photos of THAT? Or do you?
Haha! No it was my phone! And I was honestly cleaning my teeth when, like miss Muffin, suddenly this thing jetisoned itself from the ceiling and did a free dive to end RIGHT in front of my nose...Obviously I frightened the life out of it because, at break abdomen, speed it hauled itself back up to a safer distance!
