Hi, can anyone identify this spider for me please? It was pretty big - i would say the body was about 15mm across, and it is the second I've found in two days in the wet granite walls of stables. It moved very fast too! I wondered if it was a type of false widow - we have the smaller black ones living in a hole in the ceiling above our shower, and they have this same very shiny quality to them.
Thankyou! That sounds right - both were lurking in dark , damp ammonia soaked corners - which doesn't sound an appealing environment for a spider. Are they pretty common? This is the first time I have ever come across them despite using the stables for 20 years!
