Hello, i found this spider on bath towel and i am worried it might be a black widow or false widow. it was in a house in far west Cornwall, Senne, and the neighbour has rabbits in cages. sorry this is rushed but i will up load the photo of part of its body now thank you jani (it was the size of 20 p piece)?
It's a false widow and I think Steatoda grossa. There is another false widow it could be, the naitive Steatoda bipunctata (The Rabbit Hutch Spider) but this one looks too dark and leggy to be one of those. Anyway nothing really to worry about and overall not a very aggressive spider. I seem to have quite a few free range ones in my house but with the aid of my cat keep the population down to acceptable levels.
Thank you very much for your reply. i will research this spider. Thank you. I can't deny being a bit shocked though that it was indoors. I have heard scary things about this bread of spider. I certainly don't like to kill things. Should i just forget about it and not worry. no pressure to reply - i'm just thinking it through thank you
Overall I would say that the false widows have had a pretty bad press, when you consider the amount of people hospitalised and killed by bees and wasps the odd spider bite does not even count. That is not to say I would let myself get bitten by one . Almost all spider bites occur when a spider is pressed against the skin, ie crushed inside a palm or inside clothes. I just pick spiders up with a cone of paper or inside a glass and deposit them outside. The cat just eats them.
Thank you again for your reply. This is all useful information for me. and i will let the owners of the garden know when they return from holiday. i know what you mean about the 'bad press' they get. But the trouble is they are silent, whereas with bees etc you generally get a buzz to warn you they are there. My other question, is that if there is one of these spiders, does that mean there are more or many more ? Dont worry if you don;'t know the answer and no pressure to reply. oh and is it likely to home it's way back to the house and climb in the window again etc ?? kind regards
