Is it possible to identify this fly?

I saw something in the grass and quickly photographed it (head on). Sadly when I moved to try a different angle it flew off. Is it possible from this angle to say what it was (I don't even know if it was a fly but I've put this question here as that is my best guess).

It's a species of Robber Fly (Asilidae) but you'll need a better expert than I to get to species. They are usually very flighty so can be difficult to get a few photos of from different angles.

        Hi

There is a very good book that covers Robberflies (British Soldierflies & their allies, by Stubbs & Drake) and, when compared to many fly groups, is quite accessible to novices. But it is still a group that frequently requires specimens and a microscope (or a series of excellent close-up photos from different angles) to be able to make a confident species-level ID
