Is this usual?

I've been trying to photograph a hover fly just because of the challenge. I say hover fly because it was displaying typical hover fly behaviour but I can't say I've been able to identify it positively as a hover fly species. My first successful photograph revealed yellow feet and I posed a question about this already here

Today I photographed it side-on and saw its proboscis/tongue was extended in flight. Does anyone know if this is usual and if so why does it do this?
