Hoverfly id please...

Hi,

I found this hoverfly dead in my garden, Midlothian Scotland.

Could someone give me an id for it please? It is 9mm long.

I'd seen the honey bee mimic hoverfly earlier in the year but have not seen this bumblebee mimic before. Shame it was dead!

Thanks,

Jen

This is Merodon equestris, which can come in a variety of colour forms.  The vein structure near the end the wing sets this species apart from other hoverflies that mimic bumblebees.  It's quite typical for these sorts of hoverflies to have variable colour patterns; so other features may be required to identify the species.
