What is this spider?

We have lots of these black spiders in our roof garden.  They are all different sizes, so we assume they are different ages.  Can anyone tell us what they are?

This is Steatoda grossa, and yes, it's one of six species of 'False Widow spider' found in the UK. If you Google you will find no end of horror stories but these really only concern Steatoda nobilis and it is nowhere near as bad as its reputation. Steatoda grossa is a common and widespread spider in the UK and is not reliably implicated in bites - despite it's sinister looks it is really quite harmless and keeps itself to itself.

Hi I regret my original post and am sorry to cause you any concern I have lived in a number of old properties here in France and regularly find them in the old barns outbuildings and dark undisturbed areas but not once in the house I am sure that they will not cause you any harm
