Can anyone identify this dangerous looking thing? False Widdow?

Found this in my lounge before work, was wondering what it is as I dont know much about spiders? I have done what little research I can and take a guess that it is a false widdow? I only think this as its similar looking and It seems they are a little more common her in the south west? Also can this pose any kind of threat to humans or dogs? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hello there.

This looks like a large female Steatoda grossa to me and yes, that's a False Widow. Don't worry too much about bites as they are not very aggresive and most bites (a rare occurence) come from them being squashed between clothes and skin. I get one or two a week in my house and just put a glass over them and slide a playing card underneath and put them outside.
