What is this bee-like creature?

This insect which has a furry striped body like a bee but with an extremely long and mobile proboscis ended up on our house in West London today; it looked OK but a bit dopey, and I released it in the garden. I've never seen anything like it before - is it an immigrant?

Thanks

Graham

    Hi,

This is a bee fly, most likely the Large Bee Fly (Bombylius major). They parasitise solitary bee larvae and fly from March/April looking for nests in which to lay their eggs.
