I wonder if anyone could help me to identify a spider which i have found in my garage/studio. The garage is an old concrete structure dating back to the 50s i'd say, and i don't think the junk in it has been tidied up much since it was built. Until i entered a few months ago that is! i have come across numerous spiders rather similar to this one, all of which had the same body shape & type, but some of which were a shiny black colour all over, and some, like this one with some markings on the abdomen.
i hadn't worried too much about it, until i discovered a few bites, on my waist and another on my ankle...figured i should find out what is around me!
Yep, this is a false widow and almost certainly Steatoda grossa - cool garages full of clutter are just the place you will find these. It is a common and widespread species in the UK these days and not a species that is regularly implicated in bites and I suspect your bite will not be caused by this spider or any other.
