I saw this really wierd laybird in my garden today. I think its some kind of harlequin.
It was on the marigold for at least 4 hours - the plants are under an overhanging lime tree which is currently exuding loads of sticky goo which many insects can't get enough of.
I have seen the website of the harlequin survey - do they still require sitings? Also what do you do if you find harlequin ladybirds - they seem to be considered invasive pests.?
I really like the one I saw - so funky with the spots within spots! ;-)
Yes, this is a harlequin (Harmonia axyridis). There are over 100 colour varieties, I think this one is refered to as H. axyridis conspicua. Nice picture!
As far as I know the harlequin ladybird survey website http://www.harlequin-survey.org/ is still collecting data, but I can't seem to load the page this afternoon.
