Id help please

One of several found in garden pond in Brentwood, Essex this week. Person who brought them in thought it might be an alien

brought into UK on fish food larvae. I think just a British beetle, but which one?

    Hello,

This is a leaf beetle (family Chrysomelidae), and it looks like a Chrysolina sp. I can't tell which species. The person may have referred to the species called Blue Mint Beetle, Chrysolina coerulans, a known garden pest, but which doesn't seem to be an established species in Britain. Photos of this and other related species on this page.

    Yours,

    Florin
