I just found 4 of these behind a mirror in my apartment - freaked out but took pics of them as I had never seen them before.
the mirror has holes in the wood, assume maybe a 2nd hand one the landlord had put in - maybe they came from there?
I sprayed them with cockroach spray - will that kill them? they are still stuck on the wall.
They were about 2cm long....
How can I stop them coming back? I sprayed everywhere I could just to be safe!
Looks like a tenebrionid beetle. The cockroach stuff may kill them, but probably thery were just hiding from daylight. They may be a nuisance of sorts but general pretty harmless unless you have mealworms in the house...
It is a death-watch beetle (Anobiidae) of the genus Oligomerus.
In southern Europe Oligomerus ptilinoides (Wollaston, 1854) is the most common species you can found in furnitures, but Oligomerus brunneus (Olivier, 1790) might also be collected.
These species are practically identical, only differing in the number of the antennomeres (11 in the former, 10 in the latter); hence, it is virtually impossible identify them from photos.
