Answered afap - Identify my most taxing object please! Rock and man-made object?

I have no clue what this little find is, it is so light 3 grms and feels on the outside almost papery to the touch not cold and hard like stone or rock. It has a few little lines on it but no other clues.Found on Cove Hithe beach Suffolk.

Also this other stone section puzzled about this too.

Could someone help?

At a guess I think your first object is a flint sponge that has not degraded in the beach system.

If your second specimen floats like some of the material that I find on the Holderness coast then I think it could be man made as Luanne suggests.

    Hi Gabby,

The first object looks like flint. The only puzzling thing about it is the colour gradation, with the pale interior. I have to admit I don't know what causes this, but I have seen other flints with similar colour variation to this.

The second object is also puzzling - you mention that it floats. Not many natural rocks and minerals float, and this strongly suggests it is a man-made material of some kind. Some kind of plastic possibly.

If you would like to bring or post the actual specimens to us at the museum for analysis, we may be able to tell you more. Give me an email on ias2@nhm.ac.uk if you'd like to do this.

    Best wishes,

    Luanne

  • Hi there

Not sure if you're srill reading this thread, but what you're describing sounds like cuttlefish bone which is sometimes found on beaches!
