sorry. not very exotic....
the only reason i was wondering was it was so noisy.
the kind of volume of a mosquito near your ear but it was coming from
this wee punter about 15 feet away.
approx 8 mm long, feathery antenna, wings folded back,
guessing it's a non biting midge but thought they tended to be
smaller and didn't fold their wings back.

Non-biting midges come in all sorts and sizes, from tiny and black or green, to rather large and colourfull. This is one of the larger ones, possibly Chironomus or a related genus.
I think Paul might be right, that looks like an adult Chironomus, possibly a male.
