Bee maybe

Hello all, can anyone indentify this bee for me please, if it is indeed a bee.

It's in my garden in Southampton and I have not seen it before. That's not to say he hasn't been there before. The pics are not great my Brownie camera couldn't keep up with him.

I assume it was a 'he' as he kept jumping on smaller versions as they landed on the flowers. The flowers for the gardeners amongst you is Stachys Hummelo.

He is very fast, hovers precisely before he lands when his very white/yellow hairy legs become visible. Yellow stripes either side of the face, two yellow dots on his head. Yellow stripes down each side of the abdomen. Larger than a honey bee, the females about the same size as a honey bee.

Many Thanks

Gary

    Hello,

These look very much like Wool-carder bees

I've got three of them (wool carder bees) in my garden at present, very active around one particular plant. Can Spider7 tell me what my plant is?Anthidium3.JPG

Might be something called Lamb's Ears.  The leaves are silvery grey and, for want of a better word, furry.  Feel soft when you touch them.

The leaves do feel soft and are slightly hairy but not as hairy as those I see in pictures of Lambs Ears. I attach a couple more pictures - but it's not important, just for interest. I have another clump of the same plant nearby in the garden and I've not seen them around that one, but that's in a shadier spot.
