Currently Being Moderated

I found this today by the river in Ottawa Canada.  I think it might be some kind of plant life but I’m not sure what it is.  I would appreciate any kind of help to identify what this thing is.

    Re: ID?

My first thought is 'owl pellet', with that coily thing being a rubber band, maybe. But

    - it is rather round (the pellets are usually elongate)

    - it has a very high % bone (if that is what the white fragements are)

    - none of the ?bone fragments are really recognizable as animal

It is also not quite right for eagle pellet or otter spraint.

    Anybody else?...
