Flower id please

Hi,

I take these will be very common species, but I'm a total novice. Would you be able to identify them? The photos are from Sun 6 May in an area of heathland near Sandy, Bedfordshire.

Many thanks!

    Hi Ed

1st - A type of Sorrel, looks like Sheep's Sorrel

2nd - Ground Ivy, though it does also look like Bugle.  It would depend on the height for me to be sure from a photo.

3rd -  A type of wild Violet. Need more detail in the photo really but probably Common Dog Violet.

4th - I need to have more of a think about.

A good tip for getting into wild flower id is to take a photo of the whole plant, one of the leaf, one of the stem, then a close up of the flower from top/front and back.  If there are any seed heads take a photo of them too.

Think the 4th one is Star of Bethlehem, also known as Bath Asparagus.

          Hi Ed

I'm no expert, just an enthusiastic amateur!

For the Violet we'd need to see the spur behind the flower, it's yellow on Heath. Also going by the Violet colour I'd  stick to Common as Heath is described as slate blue.

Happy hunting, believe me it gets addictive!

Hello to both, just chipping with picture 2.

The flower in the centre is Bugle, AND the flower on the right is Ground Ivy, so Amanda you were right to suggest both!

Thanks Lucy!  LOL that explains why I was confused looking at just part of the picture on my phone.

                  Re: Flower id please

I always like to look at the pictures before the replies so I don't get influenced by the answers and for this one I spotted the Ground Ivy leaves, so that would have been my id. Then I saw what you'd written and thought I'd better look again as you'd said Bugle, then found that both flowers were present.
