Fairy like insect

Hello, In early August I found two flying insects over a stream on the egde of Dartmoor. They looked just like fairies and were a deep purple colour, about 3" in length and were 'playing' together above the water. Does anyone know what they were please?

    These sound like damselflies (Odonata; sub-order Zygoptera). Likely to have been one of two species; The Banded Demoiselle, Calopteryx splendens, or the Beautiful Demoiselle, Calopteryx virgo. I favour Calopteryx virgo from your description. See images here:

    could be dragonflies....??? much larger than i ever expected and in some fantastic colours, from purples to irridescent blue/greens, reds.. can you provide a more detailed description?? is there anything you know it is definitely not??
