Biodiversity ethics - a good idea?

There was discussion at yesterday's debate about financial instruments, and a mention of values associated with faith groups.  How should we think about the possible development of a more explicit public ethics in this field?  I'm aware of some discussion in IUCN in the past with reference to the ideas and principles in the Earth Charter that came out of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, but this does not really seem to have caught the imagination of policy or public audiences.

Public ethics in my experience tend to develop where there is disagreement and tension over what is right and wrong in terms of behaviour and choices in a public sphere.  Is this needed to help address the current crisis, or is there simply too little public interest?

maybe the "crisis" some often referred to needs clearer definition before an ethical response would be helpful - as is said in the blog the Earth Charter, now nearly 20 years old has not been taken up because its too ill-defined and thus not useful to guide any actions by anybody.  But if we are to talk about a crisis we need to demonstrate clearly and unambiguously just what the crisis is!!  And then maybe we can see the ethical dimension...

while i agree with much of what you say the last para has it - the two policy areas you quote are ones that really have no traction, even if they are much spoken about!!  and the precautionary principle was what caused chaos in the Invasive species debate in the 2002 meeting of the the cbd, COP6.  And intrinsic values of biodiversity seem to have vanished in the dust cloud of the TEEB project.  so somehow if you want ethics injected into the equation it would have to be done in a rather new way, and its not clear here in Nagoya how on earth you would do that...
