Any idea as to what species of caterpillar this is?

I found it in the last week of September, on a fence, in an area of mixed woodland (beech, oak and douglas firs) in Highland Perthshire, Scotland. The picture isn't very good but hopefully it can still be identified. Thanks, Louise

    Hi Louse

Difficult to tell from the fuzzy photograph. Probably Vapourer moth, though the colouring more resembles Scarce vapourer which is supposed to be restricted to Yorks, Lincs and Norfolk. But I'm fairly sure it's one of the two as they are distinctively tufted.

    Cheers
