What is this? It was found chomping it's way through a perennial Sweet  Pea plant  & measured  almost 8cms.

The nearest thing I've seen to it is a Stick Insect, but as this only had little 'stumpy' legs ( see not very good photos) I feel sure that it wasn't one. I put it, on it's bit of Sweet Pea cutting, in my Laurel hedge as I didn't know what to do witth it after taking these photos. You can just about see it's funny head & little legs in pictures 14, 19 & 26.
