Hope somebody can help with ID of this ..

was up late during the night when I heard noises.. Caught first one at ..approx 12.30am - then caught second approx 3.00am (10/08/2010- East London ) approx 2 miles north of thames.) - scared the living days out of me! ..

At first thought could be a butterfly.. im no specialist! ..

On top side of second creature It had a eye shape near the head end, on its wings, when they were folded together .

All dark shades of brown mottled effect (im trying here!)

On under side of wings there where tints of a reddish brown along sum of the edges of white.

Sorry about pictures, I was in a rush.. to catch and release outside.

Many thanks

J

The first moth looks like an upside down Red Underwing? Sorry I can't really see because of the blur and sieve.

The second one looks like a Red Underwing to me. I've seen these moths around a few timesand they are pretty large but nothing to be frightened of.
